King Louis XVI was born on August 23, 1754, and was christened Louis Auguste de France at the palace of Versailles. He was the third son of Louis, Dauphin of France, and the grandson of Louis the XV. His parents often neglected him in favor of his older brother, Louis duc de Bourgogne, who was the heir until he died at age nine. Louis Auguste married the 14 year-old Habsburg Archduchess Maria Antonia in an arranged marriage at the age of fifteen. He became King at the age of twenty, inheriting large debt and a rising resentment toward the crown. He was satisfied to leave things as they were and refused to meet his responsibilities to see to the rights of all the social classes and lacked the strength of will to stand up to Queen Marie Antoinette and his finance minister, Jacque Necker.
